Building links is an essential part of any effective SEO strategy. It can give your website the competitive edge needed to rank higher in SERP and get more organic traffic. Creating links involves strategies and techniques designed to help increase the number of quality links pointing to your website to improve visibility on search engines.
But it can be time-consuming and tricky if you’re unsure what to do. Knowing which link building strategy is good is important. With my years of experience in the SEO field, I’m here to share the most powerful link building strategies. Let’s explore some effective ways to build links for your business through SEO.
Most Effective Link Building Strategies
In the past, link building was about quantity, not quality. But this has changed with the introduction of more Google updates that focus on improving search engine rankings. Now it’s about quality instead of quantity.
When you search for how to get backlinks, you usually get a long list of tired old techniques that you already know and hear too often. But now most of them are outdated and not effective anymore.
Here I’m going to discuss a few powerful link building tactics that still work and can bring good results:
Guest Blogging
It’s one of my favorite link building techniques. Guest blogging is one of the most powerful link building strategies out there. It allows you to reach a wider audience, create content that adds value to your business, and build backlinks at the same time. Plus, it’s a great way to network with other bloggers in your industry. Guest posting serves three primary purposes:
- Bringing additional traffic to your website
- Building backlinks
- Creating relationship
The more quality guest posts you write, the more inbound links you will get. Just make sure that all of your guest posts are high-quality and relevant to the blog topic or industry. And the best part is once you become an established guest blogger, it will be easier for you to get more high-quality links.
Broken Link Building
To be honest, I can say that this is the most effective link building strategy. It’s really easy. There are only two steps involved.
- You just have to find broken links on other websites using Ahrefs or SEMrush
- Contact the webmaster to replace it with your link. It’s a win-win situation for both of you.
Let’s say you have an article about “Digital Marketing Guide” and want to get a link for this page. The only thing you need to do is find a relevant page of another website that has a broken link and ask the webmaster to replace it with my article.
This way, you get a good backlink for your website without even having to write an article or post. It sounds easy but it requires a lot of research and effort. But with some patience and effort, you can easily get quality backlinks for your website. I recommend using search operators to refine your results and get better results quickly.
Unlinked Mentions
It’s similar to broken link building, but instead of finding broken links you search for unlinked mentions of your brand name. The main reason why people do this is because unlinked mentions are often overlooked and can be used to build backlinks.
You just have to search for your brand name on Ahrefs content explorer and check for any unlinked mentions of it. If you find any, contact the webmaster and ask them to link back or replace the mention with a link to your website.
Skyscraper Technique
A great link building technique by Brian Dean of Backlinko. It’s a great way to get high-quality backlinks from an authoritative website. The basic idea behind it is that you find a linkable asset on an authoritative website, create something better and then reach out to the webmaster and ask them to replace the old resource with your new one.
This technique is highly effective because it involves finding content that already has many backlinks and creating something better than them. If you do it right, you can get a lot of powerful links from authoritative websites. I have personally used this technique to get backlinks from some of the biggest websites in my industry.

Free Tools
Everyone loves free tools and we use them with great enthusiasm. It’s a great way to get backlinks from popular websites and increase the chances of getting more viewers and customers. You just have to create free tools related to your niche, such as SEO analysis tools, keyword research tools etc.
It may sound technical, but you can buy built-in scripts easily from websites like codecanyon. You don’t have to learn to code for that. Just create some easy to use tools that can be helpful for your audience.
Guestographics
It is another off page SEO technique by Brian Dean to get backlinks from other websites. Also known as Infographic outreach. It’s one of my favorite SEO strategies of all time.
Apart from other link building strategies, this one is different and requires a bit of creativity. In this strategy you have to create an infographic instead of articles or blog posts. The strategy is pretty simple and involves six steps.
- Find the most trending topic in your niche
- Create and post an infographic on your site
- Find the sites that write about your infographic’s topic
- Show them your infographic
- Offer them unique content (“the bribe”)
- Get your contextual backlinks
Now it’s not like you can download any infographic from Canva or any other site and start pitching it to webmasters. You have to create something unique and interesting.
Something that will make them take time from their busy schedule and use your infographic instead of others. If you do it right, you can get some amazing backlinks in no time and increase your website’s organic traffic.
Release Data Studies
I’m an SEO nerd and love to read SEO blogs and case studies, from how to become a perfect SEO freelancer to how I increased webpage traffic by 30% in 6 months. I’m sure many like me love reading and sharing such content on social media.
Data Studies or Case Studies help you get backlinks from popular websites as webmasters love to post such content on their websites. You just have to keep researching, collect data from various sources, analyze it and make an interesting case study.
It’s not like you have to be a data scientist or have some special skills for that. Just picking up the right data and analyzing it with simple tools such as Microsoft Excel can do wonders for your website.
For instance, you can make a case study of your local SEO campaign. Just add the data and make an interesting story out of it.
It’s a great way to get backlinks from popular websites as people love to read such content on most occasions. You just have to keep researching, analyze the data and create something people would love to read.
Reach Out to Influencers
Influencers have tremendous power when it comes to content promotion and link building. Reaching out to influencers who share a similar audience is a great way to get your content shared and linked back to your website.
You can use social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram, as well as blogs and forums, to reach out and connect with influencers in your niche.
Once you’ve established a connection, you can start pitching them stories or content ideas that they may find interesting or useful for their readers. If they are impressed by your content, they may link to it from their site or share it on their social media accounts, driving more traffic to your website.
Competitor Analysis
I say your Competitors are your best friend. Conducting competitor analysis is another easy way of finding opportunities for link building. Analyzing what type of links your competitors are getting will give you insight into what kind of content works best to attract attention from other websites and gain valuable backlinks from them.
Then create content according to that. Find topic clusters for SEO and make your content easily crawlable.
It’s also helpful in understanding which tactics they’re using so that you can replicate them if necessary or come up with better alternatives. Several SEO tools available online can help you with your competitor analysis.
You just have to figure out which tool best suits your needs, plug in the data and let the tool generate a detailed report of your competitor’s backlinks.
Start Podcasting (If You Can)
I know it’s another line different from the others discussed above, but it can be a great way to get backlinks. Podcasting has been gaining traction and becoming more popular in recent years.
If you can make an interesting podcast that covers topics related to your niche, you should give it a go. You don’t need fancy equipment or software, as most are freely available online.
Start recording and publishing your podcast on iTunes, Spotify or any other platform. You can embed the podcast directly on your website to gain backlinks from those platforms.
I’m sure if your conversation is interesting enough, it will surely generate some backlinks from those websites.
